Learn Cat Grooming
Hi! If you’re here, you’re probably at least a little curious about cat grooming… which is how it starts for most of us.
Grooming cats can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re looking to improve your skills or explore whether this is the right path for you, you’re in the right place.
Scroll down to see what hands-on training I have available, see a list of my favorite tools, products and equipment for cat grooming or skip ahead to the contact form and tell me what you’re working on.
Hey all! I’m Lynn Paolillo and I’m a Certified Feline Master Groomer and Certifier with the National Cat Groomers Institute, and the owner of Cat Naps Cattery, a cat-only grooming and boarding salon in New Jersey.
I’ve been working with cats professionally for over 20 years and have spent much of that time teaching groomers through hands-on training, workshops, trade shows, and online education. My work focuses on practical skills, cat-safe handling, and helping groomers build confidence working with a wide range of feline temperaments and coat types.
My private training schedule is intentionally limited so I can focus on the areas where I’m able to provide the most value to students and the cat grooming industry as a whole. While I do offer select in-person training opportunities, most of my work with students happens through the National Cat Groomers Institute. This includes reviewing and grading exam submissions from students working with Certifiers around the world, supporting students as they work through their Syllabus materials, assisting Certifiers with training and evaluation standards, and developing educational content, online courses and teaching at workshops, trade show and industry events.
Because of this, my role is more centered on supporting students, Certifiers, and the certification process as a whole. When I do work directly with students, it’s typically in more focused or advanced settings.
Your Journey to CFMG Certification
If you’re new to cat grooming or working toward certification, the best place to begin is with the Complete Cat Groomer Training Syllabus through the National Cat Groomers Institute. The Syllabus provides the foundation for understanding feline skin and coat, behavior, handling, and grooming techniques. It’s designed to give you the knowledge you need before jumping into hands-on work.
Once you’ve worked through the Syllabus, many students benefit from hands-on training to practice their skills and prepare for their CFMG practical exams. NCGI recommends a minimum of 3-5 days of training before attempting practical exams. For that type and length of training, I recommend working with one of the other NCGI Certifiers, who offer more availability for training days and can provide the variety of cats needed for haircut practice and skill development.
The only time I offer this type of training is when I co-host the 2-week Pop Up Cat Grooming School sessions in Arizona with Melissa Hall. It’s one of the best options if you’re serious about building a strong foundation in cat grooming.

Training Opportunities with Lynn
Introductory days for total beginners (Shadow Days and Bath & Basic Days)
Practical exam-only appointments (you bring your cats to my salon in NJ for attempting CFMG practical exams)
Advanced or refresher training for CFMGs and Certifiers
On-site training and exam proctoring for Certifiers, their teams, and established businesses already offering cat grooming services
Zoom consultations for starting or growing your cat grooming business, troubleshooting, and training guidance
If you’re looking for more hands-on training days or do not fit in the above guidelines, I recommend working with one of the other NCGI Certifiers. They’re set up to provide the kind of private training (PPI) and cat availability that most students need.

For total beginners who are curious about working with cats, this is a relaxed introduction to the basics. We focus on foundational handling, bathing, and drying so you can get a feel for the work without committing to a full training program.

Come shadow me for a half-day of grooming in my cat only salon. A Shadow Day with me is 3 hours, starting at 9:00am, with 2-3 cats being groomed in a variety of services depending on the day.
This can include nail trims, nail caps, bathing, blow drying, sanitary/belly shaving, full body haircuts (Comb Cut/Lion Cut), mat removal, aggressive cat handling, etc. Specific grooming services are not guaranteed, however. Discussion and questions on grooming techniques, business, etc. can be done in-between grooming. Cost is $375 per day.
—
Bath & Basics Days are for students looking to learn and practice their bathing and handling skills. These days are 4 hours, starting at either 9:00am or 11:00am, and includes 2-3 cats getting nails, bath, blow dry, and comb outs. These are beginner level cats and cost is $500 per day.

As a Certifier with the National Cat Groomers Institute, Lynn can proctor written and practical CFMG exams. Registration and exam fees are submitted to NCGI before the day of testing at nationalcatgroomers.com/exams.
Written Exams can be taken at Cat Naps Cattery New Jersey, with at least 1-2 weeks notice. There may also be opportunities at trade shows to meet up for written exams. There is no proctoring fee, just the NCGI exam fee (paid directly to them).
If you’re ready to complete your Practical Exams, you’re welcome to bring your own cats to my salon for evaluation. These sessions are typically scheduled on Mondays and there is no proctoring fee, just the NCGI exam fee (paid directly to them).
This option is ideal for students who have already done training with another Certifier and are ready for or finishing certification.
See the Coming to Cat Naps section below for details about bringing your cats here. Lynn will also provide more guidelines on which cats are good candidates for practical exam attempts.

Available in 2–5 day blocks. Each day is 6 hours of full hands-on grooming, starting from 9:00am with 3-4 cats. I’m available to travel for hands-on instruction for:
Groomers who are already grooming cats
CFMG and Certifier-level training
Certifier team or employee development
These are typically scheduled in 2–3 day blocks and can be tailored to you or your team’s needs.
Feel more comfortable grooming in your own space with cats you’ve practiced on at your salon. You’ll need to have the appropriate set-up for two people to work comfortably, the products and tools needed for the services you want to work or test on (for example, Comb Cuts need a Clipper Vac or similar system), and cats that you have groomed successfully in the last 4 months.
Cost includes a daily rate (based on training needs, listed below) and reimbursement of Lynn’s travel expenses.
Training Rates
For hosting Lynn at your grooming salon, costs are as follows:
